World Prematurity Day is the 17th November across the world, but we celebrated earlier this week at Kivunge Hospital. Kangaroo Mother Care reduces the death rate by half in low birth weight babies, and so we wanted to celebrate all of the babies who have been admitted to the recently established Kangaroo Care initiative at Kivunge Hospital. We now have a dedicated room to care for these small babies, and are gradually training the staff in how to support the mamas in looking after them.
We invited all of the mamas and babies back to celebrate with us with tea and cake. We showed some videos in Swahili about how to look after small babies after going home, and weighed and checked the health of all of the babies.
The kangaroo care project has brought hope to mamas who's babies were thought too small to survive, and we have seen babies as small as 2 pounds grow stronger every day before they are ready to go home.
We hope to continue to work with the Zanzibar Kangaroo Mother Care working group from the Ministry of Health to establish Kangaroo Care at both Kivunge and Makunduchi hospitals during the next year.
